中橫開闢時，蔣經國先生在此露宿時，因思念慈母養育之恩，而將此地命名為慈恩。慈恩海拔1995公尺，位於魯翁溪(又名慈恩溪)上游，一帶因地形、氣候的影響而形成潮溼多雨冷涼的霧帶，生長其間的林木又稱『霧林』。慈恩以西，漸出現以針葉林為主的混合林，如鐵杉、雲杉、台灣二葉松等。此地闊葉樹多具變葉性質，為秋冬山景增添繽紛色彩。
