仙洞御所位於京都御所的東南面。為三大皇家御園林之一，前身為豐臣秀吉的「太閣御所」，原「聚樂第」，高台院「寧寧夫人」的住所；作為天皇居住地。迄今共六代上皇住過。

如同在原業平朝臣於百人一首第17番和歌中所描述，
「ちはやぶる 神代も聞かず 竜田川 からくれなゐに 水くくるとは」網譯詩為：
悠悠神代事，黯黯不曾聞，
楓染龍田川，潺潺流水深。
在神話時代的上古也未聽聞，龍田川水被韓紅色這樣深染……。
